Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: The Daily Progress Entry Title: 'The biggest mess': His restaurant empire is dead, but Hunter Smith won't quit Entry Credit: Hawes Spencer Judge Comment: We really liked this series of stories. The writer starts out on a positive note by sharing some good news about a recently closed restaurant and leads you into a bit more about the previous owner. Normally a story about a business closing may not be news but in this case with all of the restaurants and pubs closing, it is very newsworthy. Exceptional quotes by all involved. Great photos. Very nicely done!
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: The Daily Progress Entry Title: The Virginia wine country is growing. The local labor pool is not. Entry Credit: Haley Sandlow Judge Comment: Very detailed information on the wine industry- we learned so much about it by reading the stories. The lede on the first instalment was a swing and a miss. Not sure why they tried grabbing your attention with Trump- it was just a weird opening.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: The Progress-Index Entry Title: High impact business stories Entry Credit: Bill Atkinson Judge Comment: Very nicely done story of turning a tragedy around in six weeks. We liked the background information given on the business and the owners. Great quotes.
