A true lover of baseball history would enjoy the effort put into this story. Every sentence and image kept me moving through the pages. Hats off to the team who gave Leon Day a fine tribute.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: The Prince William Times Entry Title: Some lessons in online learning Entry Credit: Coy Ferrell Judge Comment: Strong photo story really shined in this article. The dedication of this educator, its light-hearted approach and overview is just what the reader needs. Considering the stress we all face during the pandemic, this package made me smile. Copy wasn't really needed for this story. Nicely done.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Suffolk News-Herald Entry Title: High-quality H2O Entry Credit: Jimmy LaRoue, Jen Jaqua Judge Comment: Liked the personal level of this story versus the larger brush strokes of the other social justice stories in this category. This story was a call to action directly impacting an American family that didn't have clean drinking water - something we think is an exclusive to developing countries. The running water photo could have been better, and would have liked to have seen more images of volunteers working even though the former NFL player had a crucial role in the project. The visual were not strong enough to bring the reader into the story. However, the copy gave a very nice picture of the circumstances of the family. Story could inspire others to take action in their community. Would spend a little more time on photo selection.
