Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Richmond Times-Dispatch Entry Title: Luca Powell immigration coverage Entry Credit: Luca Powell Judge Comment: This is a multi-story portfolio that shows wide coverage of the impact of immigration enforcement in the community, complete with an array of anecdotes ranging from arrests to children showing up in immigration court without representation. The series shows a concentrated effort to look at the story from a number of angles. The series was a bit overhwelming.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Richmond Times-Dispatch Entry Title: Richmond's weeklong water crisis Entry Credit: Staff Judge Comment: This is a series of stories about the city's water system going offline for nearly a week. The first story was quite informative, but the first "second-day" story, where little new was known, buried what new information it had too low. Subsequent stories showed mobilzation of the reporting staff and were better.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: The Washington Post Entry Title: DCA plane/helicopter crash Entry Credit: Washington Post staff Judge Comment: This was a series of stories resulting from the collision of a military helecopter with a passer plane outside of Washington, D.C. A lot of it was predictable: the collision with not much known to a look at who the victims were. The most compelling story in the series, though was the one about rescue team efforts to find survivors shortly aftr the collision.
Competition Comment: GENERAL COMMENT: The judge factored in enterprise in reporting as much as importance of story and general writing.
