Feature Writing Portfolio ( Non-Daily Group 1) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Amherst New Era-Progress
Entry Title: 'Amethyst Island' offers playgoers a fun, immersive getaway; Duo harnesses mutual love for radio with 'Amherst Town Talk' show; Amherst-Nelson Cares leader Beth Gamble helped keep students fed
    Entry Credit: Justin Faulconer
Judge Comment: You are a good writer. Work to make leads sound more appropriate for a feature story than a straight news story. My favorite story in all entries was the radiio duo. Congratulations on writing about a different topic from all other entries.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Nelson County Times
Entry Title: Nelson Enrichment Club up and running; Rockfish Valley Sanctuary gearing up for another busy season; Rockfish Valley Foundation unveils new learning modules, outdoor pavilion at ‘EnLit Live’
    Entry Credit: Emily Barber
Judge Comment: Be careful in your writing that you don't confuse length for strength. I enjoyed reading about the sanctuary. I felt it was your strongest story.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Amherst New Era-Progress
Entry Title: Amherst County High School graduates encouraged to 'go be great'; Retired Amherst General District Court Clerk Beverly Lewis loved the courtroom; Coolwell area churches join together for community outreach
    Entry Credit: Justin Faulconer
Judge Comment: I wasn't excited about the graduation story but the strength of retired court clerk saved this entry. You are the best writer in this category but need to work on writing better leads.
  • Competition Comment: Some interesting topics. Please make sure you write leads that are more interesting for your future stories. I really want to see more than straight leads and if there's one criticism in these entries, it is that. Also, please make sure you follow contest guidelines. All three entries must be written by one reporter.
