Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Suffolk News-Herald Entry Title: Sports cover Entry Credit: Ed Pugh Judge Comment: This was the clear winner in this category. Every element was placed on the page in a nice geometric pattern allowing the viewer's eyes to roam easily from one player to the next. Each photo was crisp and clear. Excellent use of HDR without overdoing it. A fantastic football preview cover! Keep up the good work! 1st place congratulations!
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Suffolk News-Herald Entry Title: Golf Entry Credit: Ed Pugh Judge Comment: This one bumped up into second over the girl field hockey one only because it was a clearer overall portrait. I do feel like the logo takes away from the golfer in this image, too much logo not enough person. If it is a sports spotlight maybe reduce the overall logo just a bit so the athlete isn't buried in the promo.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Suffolk News-Herald Entry Title: Field Hockey Entry Credit: Ed Pugh Judge Comment: I'll repeat what I said in the second place on this sports spotlight. The image of the young female athlete was not as crisp and clear as it should have been. The logo also is a bit large for a sports spotlight. You should always make the student the main portion of the overall spotlight.
Competition Comment: Great designs for these sports promos. As I was judging on the photography, it was obvious the football preview cover was the big winner. Again, editors should encourage more entries by their staff in this category. Congratulations to everyone and keep up the good work.
