Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: The News & Advance Entry Title: Feb. 18, June 2, Sept. 29 Entry Credit: Staff Judge Comment: Great publication overall. Compelling and interesting photography and subjects. Enjoyed the photos in the local and state section and the clean design throghout. Well-designed infographics like HUMP DAY and beautiful special section covers enhance the content without overwhelming the page. Took a lot of design risks with the sections that ended up leaning in your favor. The intent, the effort, and the care is there. Nice work!
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Richmond Times-Dispatch Entry Title: Times-Dispatch sections Entry Credit: Times-Dispatch staff Judge Comment: Clean and visually appealing design. The use of white space and headline hierarchy enhance readability and guide the reader effectively. It's a solid, well-presented newspaper with quality in-depth reporting and storytelling and a healthy advertisement base. The paper's got an impressive heft to it. ... There were quality control and legibility issues with some reverse text. There could also be better continuity between some photos and content like the DANGEROUS CROSSINGS photo and cutline ... A woman is holding up a photo of a baby, but the cutline said the woman's son was killed while walking home from his job at Firehouse Subs? Is that photo of her late son as a baby? An explanation or use of a more recent photo would have helped. ... Keep up the great work!
