Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: C-VILLE Weekly Entry Title: An ode to the hotel bar Entry Credit: Max March, Tristan Williams Judge Comment: Great story idea and beautifully executed. The author’s tone and narrative style works perfectly. The photos are not just perfect, but were perfectly selected. I can only imagine all of the great photos that must have been edited. My compliments to all involved.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Loudoun Now Entry Title: Remembering Flight 514 Entry Credit: Norman K. Styer, Douglas Graham Judge Comment: This story, originally published in December 2024, is so poignant today in light of recent airline safety issues and the FAA’s safety concerns today. The sidebar is a powerful piece of the story. The reporter did an excellent job of covering the remembrance aspect and history, but more was even more deft in dealing with family members still impacted by this tragedy. The images also demonstrate a sensitivity and respect for the people at the service. Excellent work by the photographer in both close-up, candid portraits and also capturing the atmosphere.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: InsideNoVa/Prince William Entry Title: Solheim Cup Entry Credit: Bill Kamenjar Judge Comment: A well-rounded story with multiple voices from all angles, including fans and competitors. The photos were outstanding – action shots, environmental photos, candid jubilation, the smoking athlete (!) – and the layout and design was expertly done. This was a big-time event and it was covered with big-time quality. One nitpick: I wanted to see a picture of the shuttle fiasco (people waiting in line, etc.).
Competition Comment: So many strong entries in this category. Loved the diversity of stories.
