Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Fauquier Times Entry Title: The faces of Fauquier County’s Juneteenth celebration Entry Credit: Meghan Mangrum, Florence Shen, Vincent Sales, Laurene Craig Judge Comment: This package would have benefitted from a bigger, bolder headline on the cover ... Great photo collage that immediately pulls you in. ... Reporter did a quality job seeking out different voices from participants -- both local and from surrounding areas. Different ages and perspectives, too. The quotes were meaningful and impactful; it's clear how muchthe joy Juneteenth celebration brought these folks, while also still addressing the unfortunate racist origins that made it necessary.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Arlington Connection Entry Title: Memorial Day Entry Credit: Eden Brown, Geovani Flores Judge Comment: Wonderful photos and variety of quotes that hit hard. Very well done coverage for an annual event. Felt like meatier details were glossed over – not sure if an "expanded" story online would have helped flesh out a few things. I don't know what X-Lites are, would have been interesting to know more about the flowers growing from 10,000 to 100k+, and the USS Fitzgerald incident needs more explanation. The online links at the end appear to be squeezed in at the last minute -- could have been display type display to drive people to more information online.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Fauquier Times Entry Title: Dream home hopes dashed Entry Credit: Tate Hewitt, Doug Stroud, Stephanie Redding Judge Comment: Solid reporting and photography on a hard news story filled with emotional tension. Solid reporting from all of the key stakeholders, although I would have liked to hear from Attkisson. Photo on the cover and inside give a good sense of the family and their situation. Unfortunate cutline misidentification on McKenna in the family photo.
Competition Comment: Strong photography and design with each of these stories.
