Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: The Virginian-Pilot Entry Title: Kelly Holbert Entry Credit: Billy Schuerman, Cait Burchett Judge Comment: A beautifully written and intimately photographed reporting effort on a big issue in that community: family coping with deployment of a military member spouse. Loved the trust that was obviously built by reporting team with family being written about. Bravo!!
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: The Virginian-Pilot Entry Title: Landyn Davis Entry Credit: Kendall Warner, Katrina Dix Judge Comment: A sad, maddening and sobering reporting effort on a young child victim of senseless gun violence. Really good writing that mixed the hard statistics on this plague on communities with a touching tale of Landyn, bravely battling to regain his life. Katrina clearly built some great trust with the source family that showed in her care of writing and word choice. Thank you.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: The Virginian-Pilot Entry Title: New generation of farmers Entry Credit: Stephen Katz, Stacy Parker Judge Comment: Nice feature which was carried by good photographs and peppy writing that flowed and read well. Liked how history was mixed with modern realities of farming along with different sources/voices that are involved in a range of agriculture. Thanks!
Competition Comment: A wealth of outstanding entries in this category from very talented reporters and photographers. The top four placements were all very, very good examples of teamwork between reporter and photographer (one honoree did both!) and brought readers critical information and stories to enrich their lives and educate, too. Thank you!
One note on the entrants: three were disqualified for not following the contest criteria or not submitting an entire tear-sheet for review or a password/log-in for judging online. I am sorry. Please ensure the entries meet the requirements and you include all content needed.
