Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: C-VILLE Weekly Entry Title: UVA Encampment Entry Credit: Eze Amos Judge Comment: Shot of protesters aiding a woman who apparently was peppersprayed in the eyes. Goof framing, but the angle has the unfortunate effect of making the woman look like a BOrge from Star Trek. Still, a nice image.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: The Prince William Times Entry Title: Car battery sparks garage fire Entry Credit: John Calhoun Judge Comment: Firefighters standing around after dousing a fire that damaged cars in a garage. What makes the photo work is including the burnout cars. More of an after-action photo than an action photo.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Loudoun Now Entry Title: Silver Ridge Explosion Chief Williams Entry Credit: Hanna Pampaloni Judge Comment: Image of the fire chief addressing news reporters. I like that the image is close up, but wish the person on the left had been cropped out to make it a stronger photo. Love the expression on the second firefighter's face.
Competition Comment: All the images entered were good news photos and most had excellent framing. Protest photos seem to have an advantage because they show in-the-moment action rather than documenting information after the fact. Ultimately, i went with the photo that best told a story in the image, ones that the reader could understand and be drawn to even without a caption.
