  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Smithfield Times
    Entry Title: Resilience
    Entry Credit: Stephen Faleski
Judge Comment: The writer gives the community an outlet for their grief and loss in this story. It is both a testimony to the impact the community had on this young woman and she on them. It is what newspapers are for — a forum to inform, grieve, and memorialize. Even as an outsider with no ties to this community, the writer portrays the loss in a way that also makes me grieve for them. In addition to being well-written and engaging, it is generally free of errors, and is the reason I am choosing it as a winner.
