Judge Comment: This was a small but strong field of entries. This story topped the field for several reasons. I loved the writing. It really sparkled - on a topic one might consider to be less than sparkly. The organization was strong, and the story flowed smoothly. I read this and was actually interested in what the subject did. The quotes from others and from the subject added so much. Outstanding work!

  • Competition Comment: This was a very small but very strong field of entries. Overall, I saw great writing. One issue that made difference is in story organization. I'll be blunt here - none of us have the time to produce the quality of work we aspire to, Our newsrooms are small and understaffed. But organization of your material matters, and it made a difference here. These stories all had very different but very interesting subjects. I really enjoyed reading them.
