Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Richmond Times-Dispatch Entry Title: Data analysis of Virginia bridge safety Entry Credit: Sean McGoey Judge Comment: Nice total package - Starting with the numbers, explaining what they mean and how it affects readers in an easily-digestible format that integrates interactive visuals.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: The Virginian-Pilot Entry Title: Data Journalism Entry Credit: Hanna Eason Judge Comment: *Wonderful* interactive graphics. Very dense information in several stories that was well-organized but could benefit from a more reader-friendly presentation with additional narrative and guideposting.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Richmond Times-Dispatch Entry Title: Population push Entry Credit: Sean Jones Judge Comment: Nice, digestible narrative that was supported by, and explains, the numbers. Wide-ranging discussion of the trend, felt comprehensively reported.
Competition Comment: This was a difficult category to judge, with strong entries. I found myself back and forth about which approach to rate more highly: telling stories with numbers (which is hard to do in a way that keeps reader attention) and telling a story about the numbers (which often is not quite as deep, but more readable). In the end I gravitated more to the latter. Great work all around.
