  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Daily Progress
Entry Title: UVa Shootings and Aftermath
Entry Credit: Sydney Shuler, Mike Kropf, Greg Madia, Alice Berry, Hawes Spencer
Judge Comment: Excellent lead sentences, which grip the reader using limited wordage. Overall, well written. Fourth paragraph sets the scene so well, just before the players and head coach share their memories.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: Danville Register and Bee
Entry Title: John R. Crane - General News Writing 1
    Entry Credit: John Crane
Judge Comment: Well written and well researched: lots of sources. Two issues: I wanted an analysis, at least briefly, on the county housing situation. That's an alternative to the Danville shortage. And, not to quibble, but I would like to have known if Mr. Simmons had a wife and/or children. If so, that would have amplified the hardships of finding a place to live.
  • Place Name: Third Place

Entry Title: Charles Paullin General News Writing W12
    Entry Credit: Charles Paullin
Judge Comment: Solid writing and interesting information, from local to national, on the shortage of firefighters. You successfully tackled what seems to be an underreported subject.
  • Place Name: Alternate Winner

Judge Comment: Well written with lots of sources. An issue: In reference to Mr. Mayes and Ms. Sabine being unable to afford rate hikes, the story states: But the building’s owner said tenants are not being priced out of the apartments and the new rental rates are within guidelines. The story doesn’t say, in so many words, that Mr. Mayes and Ms. Sabine don’t fall under the decontrol period and/or aren’t protected by the “section 42 of the IRS tax code” in the paragraph beginning “For existing low-income tenants …”). Were they in the 60 (of 74) resident covered by the federal low-income housing tax credit program, and therefore eligible to fall under the decontrol period after the foreclosure?
