Judge Comment: The photographer had the opportunity or made the opportunity to stay with the story beyond initial events and it makes for a compelling series of photos. Some very well seen images that use light and moment in surprising and captivating ways. The image of the small child watching the officer gather up police tape and the unusual angle for the closing image of the casket being taken out of the church bookend a strong visual story.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Richmond Times-Dispatch
    Entry Title: Lee's Last Stand
Entry Credit: Bob Brown, Daniel Sangjib Min, Shaban Athuman, Eva Russo
Judge Comment: The essay left me feeling like I had experienced the event. A nice mix of images, that captured the feeling of the event and was sometimes visually surprising. A few images felt repetitive, but overall each image made me curious to see what next.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Richmond Times-Dispatch
    Entry Title: Short Track Racing
    Entry Credit: Shaban Athuman
Judge Comment: Some really nice images that got a bit lost in the mix. A tighter edit would have made this a much stronger story. The little girl in the big wheel, the crew kneeling around the car, the tight shot of the driver's eyes, were especially strong.
