That was definitely the topic that separated itself from the rest. But all three stories were clearly written with plenty of detail and the quotes effectively sprinkled throughout.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: The Roanoke Times Entry Title: Laurence Hammack environmental coverage Entry Credit: Laurence Hammack Judge Comment: Again, three stories that were enjoyable to read. Tackled all 3 subjects expertly. And what I liked the most is that all the stories, beginning with the piece on the recycling facility, were focused on consumers.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: The Virginian-Pilot Entry Title: Health & Environment Entry Credit: Dave Ress Judge Comment: You could flip a coin on the quality of the stories among the top 3 spots. Thought the mental health story was exceptional and very much enjoyed the tale of The Hunt for Spotted Turtle 962.
