Judge Comment: At the heart of this series of stories documenting the ongoing clash between city bureaucrats and the fire department is what matters to every community: public safety. This is the kind of reporting that cuts though lies and coverups and written statements and gets to the bottom of government disfunction. Very nicely done, thorough, and unrelentless focus on the truth.

Judge Comment: This is a great collection on a disgraced school official, his fake "doctorate," and the fallout over it. If it were not for the newspaper reporting on this story, it may well have been quietly swept under the rug. Kudos for keeping government accountable and transparent.
