Combination Picture and Story ( Non-Daily Group 3)Back
Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: The News-Gazette Entry Title: Parade Time Entry Credit: Harrrison Mines, Stephanie Blevins Judge Comment: I placed this first because it told the story of a community that came together to life the spirits of the the young and young at heart during the pandemic. THe number of photos were a bit much, while some were funny and heartwarming. This is what community journalism is about.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Rappahannock Record Entry Title: Soul Grind Entry Credit: Lisa Hinton-Valdrighi, Robert Mason Jr. Judge Comment: This was a tough second place call, as I was seriously looking at first place for this story due to its cover image. I enjoyed the quick read on how a group saw a need to spread some holiday cheer and took action. I'm not sure how the the third image fits the story. Would have preferred an image of someone watching the concert on their laptop or other device. A cheerful holiday story.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: The News-Gazette Entry Title: W&L Mock Convention Entry Credit: Katie Doar, Harrison Mines, Stephanie Blevins, Mary Woodson, Colin Whitmore Judge Comment: There was a great deal of work put into this coverage, but felt a major piece was missing - the student perspective. Granted this is an every-four-year event that give W&L a convention experience. The images were very nice, but the story was like reading Super Bowl coverage without player comments. This was a Who's Who story versus an education story. I am making the assumption is a college is involved, so should student comments. Otherwise, this was party coverage. I do appreciate the effort on this piece.
