Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: The Smyth County News & Messenger Entry Title: Hot Art Entry Credit: Stephanie Porter-Nichols Judge Comment: This was cool story about a man and his passion for art, not money. His community support of donating his art, along with the science part of the process was interesting and the deciding factor in putting this in first place. I do think a little more time could have been spent on images. Would have liked to have seen a better pic of the gentleman blowing glass.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Southside Sentinel Entry Title: Steel survivors Entry Credit: Tom Chillemi, Susan Simmons Judge Comment: I wanted to put this story as number one, but felt the number of images cluttered the story. Would have rather seen a small set of larger and select images. The history lesson and the passion this man has for bygone era of tractors was nicely put together. Less can be more when it comes to images. Great community story. Enjoyed it very much and got a history lesson along the way.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Orange County Review Entry Title: Historic Garden Week Entry Credit: Jeff Poole Judge Comment: This images in the story were strong. The horse jumping image got my attention immediately. With all the stress we face during this pandemic, the story reminded me there is life outside of quarantine. I was impressed this event has only been cancelled once before - WWII. A great reminder of a treasured community event. I appreciate the number of images in the story. Would have reduced by one or two, or at least move the horse pasture photo to page 2. Didn't really like the redundancy.
