Special Sections or Special Editions ( Daily Group 1)Back

  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: Danville Register and Bee
Entry Title: SoVa Living - Black History
    Entry Credit: Staff
Judge Comment: Clear winner in this category. Strong cover photo, well-written stories, and good use of both historic and current photos. The themed material was well-organized and the magazine-quality production values were well served with this edition.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The News Virginian
Entry Title: All News Virginian Fall Teams
Entry Credit: Lauren Hunt, Logan Bogert, Mattie Marsh, Nancy Sorrells, Steve Cox, Hubert F. Grim III
Judge Comment: Solid content and organized for easy access. If you care about high school sports in this market, you undoubtedly read this special edition. The broadsheet format presented some design challenges with some art played too large, especially for the number of stand-them-up-and-shoot-them photos. I appreciated seeing a portrait in addition to the action photos, but would have used the action art (undoubtedly from the files) larger or invested more time/creativity in the portrait shots.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: Danville Register and Bee
Entry Title: SoVa Living - Showtime
    Entry Credit: Staff
Judge Comment: A good introduction to the faces and places behind the arts in the Danville area. Design showcases the writing and photography and leads readers through the section.
