  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Cavalier Daily
Entry Title: Paging through the past: An examination of Corks & Curls
Entry Credit: Abby Clukey, Nik Popli
Judge Comment: This story confirmed what I have heard many people say -- Racism as demonstrated through this college yearbook is not limited to one state but was pretty much universal, at least through the Midwest as well as the South. It opened my eyes to the culture that was prevalent in the 20th century as well as earlier.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Central Virginian
Entry Title: James River water dispute
    Entry Credit: David Holtzman
Judge Comment: While the final chapter of this mystery is not told in this entry, the story up to the time of publication is told well. Who will win? It's obvious water is needed and it is obvious the natives care deeply about their ancestors.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Cavalier Daily
Entry Title: Emails reveal admissions, development and administrative personnel discuss ‘high-priority’ applicants linked to donors
Entry Credit: Gracie Kreth, Abby Clukey
Judge Comment: This is an important subject. In light of national news stories, who knows if high school students are getting a fair shot at college. But I found this reporter's story to be comforting that not every college is unfair in its recruiting practices.
