In-depth or Investigative Reporting ( Daily Group 1)Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The News Leader
Entry Title: Revolving Door: how inmates end up back in jail
Entry Credit: Jeff Schwaner, Julia Fair
Judge Comment: This two-year-long deep dive into jail records read as a seamless weaving of inmates' stories with staggering statistics of recidivism -- much higher than "official" reports. Despite all the time spent and data pulled for this package, it was all very readable and digestible. The "how we reported this" piece was a necessary and important component. In a category with very strong entries, this one won for its "initiative and thoroughness."

Judge Comment: Incredible piece of work, just incredible. An immense amount of thought and care clearly went into weaving this series about a topic that no one wants to talk about, but everyone needs to be educated about.
