Judge Comment: All three stories are excellent, very interesting, very compelling and keep you coming back for more. For the Jay Huff story, after the last sentence, I couldn't believe there wasn't more. Not because of the writing, I just wanted more. I went to the newspaper website and found the story, but there wasn't anymore. But I wanted more.

Entry Title: A chance to care, connect

Judge Comment: Three very good stories. These should be ranked as 1A. Very interesting, very compelling. The "Chance to Care" was very emotion-filled and very humanizing. The "Hidden Nurses" was very relevant, timely and needed. The "Descendants of Slaves" shone a bright light on, as the story says, "this country has still not reckoned with its history of slavery." Very informative and an essential piece of work.

Entry Title: Rescuer has an abiding passion for possums; A lesson in addiction; and Baby won't wait

Judge Comment: Very enjoyable reads, especially the possum and baby stories. The possum rescuer story was cute, quirky, enlightening and an easy read. The addiction lesson was a good cautionary tale, but came off a bit too clinical while relying on a lot of statistics. The surprise birth was thoroughly enjoyable. I laughed out loud throughout, imagining what it must have been like during those harrowing minutes of birth on a neighbor's front walk. Bravo!!!
